Beschreibungen/Notizen
Cray discusses the mysterious explosion that killed ten sailors and three naval officers in Tripoli Harbor in 1804. The explosive-laden ketch Intrepid, commanded by Master Commandant Richard Somers, was dispatched to destroy the Tripolitan fleet, but exploded before reaching its goal. Although there is no evidence to support the claim, Somers and his crew were deemed to have destroyed themselves rather than be captured, and are celebrated as martyrs.
