  • The food habits of 12 species of small mammals were determined. These mammals were collected between June, 1963, and June, 1969, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Millipedes comprised over 65 per cent of the food of Sorex fumeus, while a single specimen of Sorex palustris had fed on Plecoptera and Ephemeroptera larvae. Millipedes, insects and insect larvae, gastropods, and earthworms were the major food items of Blarina brevicauda. Seeds, fruit, and vegetation were the principal food items of Peromyscus maniculatus, while the main summer foods of Peromyscus leucopus were insects, fruit, insect larvae, and millipedes. Ochrotomys nuttalli fed mainly on insects and on the seeds of Smilax, Prunus, and Cornus. Vegetation formed the bulk of the diet of Synaptomys cooperi, Clethrionomys gapperi, Microtus pennsylvanicus, Microtus chrotorrhinus, and Microtus pinetorum. The fungus Endogone amounted to almost 40 per cent of the total volume of food of Napaeozapus insignis. Variations in food habits according to season and elevation, as well as the significance of Endogone as a food item, are discussed.
