  • The historical and current meanings of the pair of words 'economic independence' have elicited various points of view. This couplet forms the main axis that unifics the series of articles and the panel discussion to follow. Friends and pupils of Professor Don Patinkin chose to focus on the segment of Patinkin's teachings that preoccupied him in Israel's early years, i.e., the durability of this country, which has attained political and security independence along with international economic dependency that is proven and persistent. The two main articles below concern themselves with both the historical meaning of the term and its practical implications, as they stem from the data and policy decisions of earlier time and the present — even if the common phrase has eclipsed the technical meaning of economic independence as an indicator of the state of the economy (M. Michaeli and M. Bruno, the latter of whom sadly passed away shortly after he wrote the atricle). In view of this intention and the composition of the participants, the panel discussion on 'Economic Independence for Israel at the End of the Fifth Decade,' presented at the end of this section, is pledged to a presentation of current problems of dependency and independence and discussion of the meaning of economic policy from this perspective. The initial remarks to follow are devoted to the personality of Don Patinkin as a researcher, a teacher, and educator, and a Zionist through personal fulfillment, who, as a young man, emigrated from America to the fledgling State of Israel with the doctrine of modern economics in his baggage. In these contexts, the authors address themselves to his brilliant, exciting, and illuminating autobiographical essay, 'From Chicago to Jerusalem,' published in this journal in the summer of 1994, about a year before his death.
