This paper studies the control exerted by the State on the textbook from the first scholar laws of the Spanish liberalism of the beginnings of the nineteenth century to the conservative reaction in 1913. Although the public institutions persisted on their vigilant and controlling policy on the texbook throughout the century—excepting the libertarian revolutionary stage—, this policy suffered different interpretations resulting from the political swings of that time and was exercised on every level of teaching. In broad outline, these ranged from the imposition of an only texbook in schools by the exalted liberalism in the first years of the 19th century, to a restricted freedom of choice among the textbooks, approved by the moderated section through Moyano's law, which was in general the prevailing policy until late in this century.
