• Based on documents discovered while carrying on research in the Vatican Archives, this article is a contribution to the study of the bull Apostolicae curae on Anglican Ordination promulgated by Leo XIII; in particular, it deals with a number of the bull's preparatory schemes which permit one to follow the principal phases of its composition from the first sketches to the definitive text. The article begins with a few introductory notes; they reveal not only how the issue of Anglican Ordination was understood by Leo XIII at the time when he was invited to intervene, but also how the two hierarchies, Catholic and Anglican, viewed the same issue, and how even at that point this question appeared to be connected to ecclesiological problems. The article then proceeds to describe the recently available documents and to take special note of those suggested emendations which refer both to the way in which Leo XIII conceived the value and the practice of reordination, and to the way in which he understood the defect of intention and of form; also of importance is the weight which the pontiff attributed to his own decision. The appendix to the article contains the entire text of the first scheme of the bull which was drafted by Cardinal C. Mazzella, the first Latin redaction and, by means of a synoptic juxtaposition which renders a comparison with the latter both easy and illuminating, the definitive text of the bull.
