• Luigi Pirandello's comic tale La giara is in a decidedlycarnivalesqueregister. Pirandello first published it as a short story and later adapted it for the stage, in the process increasing thecarnival symbolismby drawing from his local culture. This study takes ananthropologicalandhistoricalapproach to identify and analyse thecarnival symbolsas they appear in both theliteraryand thetheatricalforms. It also looks at howPaoloandVittorio Tavianifurther enhance thecarnivalesque registerin their cinematic rendition, in part by borrowing fromGiovanni Verga's‘La roba’.
