• Le 30 décembre 1948, deux jours après l'entrée des Israéliens sur le territoire égyptien, les Britanniques, invoquant leurs obligations au titre du traité anglo-égyptien de 1936, menacent Israël de prendre part au conflit aux côtés des Arabes. Cette injonction britannique, inattendue dans la mesure où les Egyptiens ne la sollicitèrent à aucun moment, traduit l'extrême sensibilité des Britanniques aux évolutions de la région. Il s'agit pour les Britanniques d'empêcher une déstabilisation du pouvoir égyptien qu'un désastre militaire ne manquerait pas de provoquer. Les Britanniques sont également soucieux d'adresser un geste fort en direction des Arabes dans un contexte de guerre froide qui s'affirme. L'ultimatum britannique est aussi conçu comme une mise en garde contre toute intrusion israélienne en Transjordanie. Enfin, le geste britannique apparaît comme un mouvement d'humeur au regard de l'attitude américaine dans la question de Palestine On December 30, 1948, two days after the Israelis had entered Egyptian territory, the British — with reference to their obligations under the 1936 Anglo-Egyptian treaty — threatened Israel with taking part in the conflict alongside the Arabs. The British injunction which was quite unexpected insofar as the Egyptian had in no way requested it, showed how sensitive the British were to developments in that region. The British were seeking to prevent the Egyptian regime from being destabilised, which was bound to happen in case of a military disaster. The British were also anxious to win Arab hearts and minds in the nascent Cold War context. The British ultimatum was also seen as a warning against any Israeli intrusion into Transjordan. Finally the British move seems to have been a bad-tempered response to the United States position on the Palestinian issue.
