• Novels tend to be more closely connected than some other forms of literature with the conditions of life at the time they were written. Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship could only have been written in the late eighteenth century, and it has been frequently and adequately interpreted in these terms. But that is not my purpose here, because the audience I am envisaging is not one made up primarily of students of the transition from the ancien régime to the new configurations of the nineteenth century.
