• In this essay, I explore one aspect of why fundamentalist movements tend to emerge or strengthen when tradition—a core value of Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christianity—is perceived to be under threat. I approach the topic through the lenses of religious sectarianism and radicalization, in which contexts tradition and, consequently, fundamentalism become redefined in distinctly negative and reductionist ways: tradition is reduced to something that existed in the past when the religion was pure; fundamentalism becomes the negative pole in the oppositional binary fundamentalism-tolerance.¹ My discussion is not concerned explicitly with Catholicism or Orthodox Christianity but rather with religion
