This chapter describes the conceptions of pantomime and clowning that inform the rest of this study, focusing on the forms that Dickens would have known, firstly a child and then later as an equally enthusiastic adult spectator. After sketching a brief history of pantomime up to the time of Dickens’s death, I trace a similar chronological development of its principal protagonist, the clown, who for Dickens was the most interesting and important character. I will also briefly delineate the figure of the Shakespearean clown, who was another attractive figure for Dickens, being the most significant incarnation of the English stage
