• Question: How are “morphing friezes” an homage to M. C. Escher? Dutch artist M. C. Escher had an uncanny talent for realizing symmetry in drawings. As Doris Schattschneider tells us [17], it was Pólya’s 1924 article about the 17 wallpaper groups that moved Escher to produce figurative patterns with wallpaper symmetry. Among the many expansive directions of his work, Escher created patterns that seemed to morph gradually from one pattern to another.
