• Taiwan’s personal computer (PC) industry grew from a mere fledgling in the late 1970s to third largest in the world by the mid-1990s. Most of its technology and standards came directly from the United States, just as in the video industry. However, in one area Taiwan was unable to copy the United States: standards for Chinese-language computing, particularly a code to allow the transfer of documents containing Chinese characters from one computer system to the next.
