• I shall use the term “heterogeneity” to refer to an absence of unity, to the effects of exteriority and rupture that are aroused by bodily phantasies, effects that will be found in turn in the order of signifiers. Here they appear as a symbolic manifestation of heterogeneous drives, that is to say of a destructuring process which cannot at the outset be assimilated to signification, but which makes sense through symbolization. Moreover, it must be emphasized that the hybrid, surplus nature of the symbols of heterogeneity tends to dissolve into orgiastic indistinction. The latter remains nonetheless the antithesis of ordering
