  • According to the preserved texts, some of the powerful figures treated in the previous chapter persisted after the arrival of the Indo-European religion and interacted with the divinities in the nordic pantheon. Thus Óðinn regularly consulted with the vǫlva and was surrounded by valkyries, and the elves who had been worshipped in Sweden were frequent participants in the feasts celebrated by the gods. Without being inscribed in medieval texts, other figures—such as the land-spirits—continued their lives in the popular imagination and were detected by later folklorists.
