IN 1847—a few years before Harvard Medical College ejected its first Black students, Martin R. Delany among them—Harriot Hunt became the first woman to apply to the medical school. Dean Oliver Wendell Holmes asked her to withdraw her application. The practicing healer made another attempt in 1849 that would also fail. This convergence did not go unnoticed. Mary Putnam Jacobi, herself a leader among the first generation of women doctors, writes,
