• Although Zhang Hongtu is best known for an art of political critique, his densely layered work is as engaged with the history of art as with issues of free speech.¹ Among these dialogues with art, his involvement with Picasso’s work most fully displays both his deep understanding of past achievements and his probing departure from historical models to create his own, original art.
