- Numerous studies have examined diatoms present in Paleogene and lower Neogene sediments. These include studies by Baldauf and Monjanel (1989), Benda (1972), Cleve-Euler (1941), Fenner (1976, 1977, 1981, 1984a, 1984b, 1985, 1986), Fourtanier (in press), Gombos (1977, 1982, 1983, 1984, and 1987), Gombos and Ciesielski (1983), Grunow (1866), Heiberg (1863), Kanaya (1957), Schrader and Fenner (1976), and Schulz (1927), among others. The majority of these studies document the diatom assemblage from stratigraphic sequences or individual samples for specific biostratigraphic or taxonomic purposes.
