• By the time Wilson was ten years old the fundamental laws of nature, that is, the laws governing all the parts of the universe including our physical selves, were found to be quite different from what had been understood thus far, and far more humbling even than Galileo’s discovery of our fragility and remoteness had been. The discovery of X-rays, radioactivity, the substructure of the atom, relativity, quantum physics, the uncertainty principle, which Heisenberg would announce before Wilson turned thirty, required a new and untranslatable language, one which, for all his linguistic curiosity, he would never learn. One might say
