• A centennial celebration provides the occasion to take a fresh look at a writer’s work, to pay tribute and examine the legacy. We can profit from this when the writing still somehow lives, still has meaning for a new generation. In the case of a critic this is unusual because criticism, unlike literature, is cumulative, developing from one generation to another as critics build on their predecessors by exploding or assimilating them.
