- The centenary of Edmund Wilson’s birth, first celebrated at the Mercantile Libran in Manhattan, offered Princeton’s American Studies Program an opportunity to pay belated homage to Wilson’s memory. Like most universities. Princeton has done a much better job in honoring its financial benefactors, its statesmen and politicians, and (now and again) its illustrious professors than it has in honoring its writers. The tire magnate Harvey Firestone, who provided the necessary funds for constructing the university’s main library, naturally had the building named after him. Adlai Stevenson is remembered with Stevenson Hall: inside Firestone Library there is a sublibrary called the
