• Edmund Wilson is a name that comes up whenever people start lamenting the disappearance of something called the public intellectual. The association is too simple, for two reasons. One is that if a public intellectual is a person who volunteers to reflect in print on the poverty of our common condition, the United States today is certainly not lacking for them.
