Edmund Wilson was not an acute political diagnostician, a student of comparative government, or an economist. He was, besides his many other talents, a good, and sometimes inspired, journalist who reported accurately what he saw and heard and thought. One of his observations about Turgenev applies equally well, I think, to himself.
