• Edmund Wilson’s forays into Soviet Russia, despite his inimitable style and curiosity, were accompanied by the dubious judgments of his era and his circle. It’s not impossible to imagine what even Mikhail Gorbachev might make ofTo the Finland Station. (Alas, this is a purely imaginative act; Wilson is not read in contemporary Russia.) Gorbachev and other erstwhile Communists would surely recognize the outline ofTo the Finland Station—its accretion of authors rising to the pinnacle of Marx and Engels, Lenin, and Trotsky—as an almost exact replica of a statue in the Alexander Gardens outside the Kremlin, a
