- I have grown up with the Dead Sea Scrolls. I was a fledgling instructor in Rochester, in upstate New York where Wilson returned at the end of his life, when his first stunning articles on the scrolls appeared in theNew Yorkerin 1955. I met Wilson ten years later, when he was kind enough to consult me before going to Israel. Rereading him on the scrolls has been like reliving the formative years of my professional life.
