- In the discussion of production relations and class patterns in the previous chapter, two distinct lines of investigation were successively followed regarding: (i) the position of individuals and classes vis-à-vis the means of production; and (ii) the extraction of surplus-labor, its main channels, and its allocation among various fractions of the upper classes. The link between the two aspects is straightforward: The position vis-à-vis the means of production is the key determinant governing the access to surplus-labor.
