The eastern North American monarch population is on a statistically significant decline (Brower et al. 2012a; Rendón-Salinas and Tavera-Alonso 2013) and ominously, in Chapter 12 in this section, Jepsen and Black also report an 84% decline in the average number of monarchs per overwintering site in the western population from 1997 to 2011.
