• Arnold Zweig has become an embarrassment to literary historians and critics. From the appearance of his first novel,Der Streit um den Sergeanten Grischa,in 1927, his art seemed to decline until it reached its lowest point in his last novel,Traum ist teuer(1963), where the theme of theGrischanovel is taken up again merely in order to serve as a narrative scaffolding for political propaganda. Since his works are generally considered to form a homogeneous sequence, this decline had a profoundly negative effect on their overall appreciation.
