On or about 23 June 1740, somewhere near Abercorn Creek in New Ebenezer, Georgia, a pastor addressed a group of recalcitrant labourers from Salzburg whom he had asked to build a gristmill. Perhaps because war with Spain had taken ten of their number away to Florida, the labourers were feeling their power, and the carpenter in charge of the project, one Georg Kogler, had been telling the pastor that his fellow workers would not begin construction ‘unless a specific wage was agreed upon and promised’.
