• This translation of the Opus Majus is based on the corrected text of Bridges’ edition, London, I900. Messrs. Williams and Norgate, publishers of Bridges’ edition, have kindly granted permission to reproduce the drawings which were copied by Dr. Bridges from the original manuscripts of the Opus Majus. I have tried to keep in mind the needs of the reader who desires to follow the Latin text with the aid of a translation, and for this reason I have not attempted as a rule to paraphrase or break up Bacon’s sentences. I gladly take this opportunity to express my deep obligation
