- I want to begin my consideration of nineteenth-century kinship and class by a brief mention of two extraordinary novels of society and manners published during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The first, Anthony Trollope’s 1875 novel,The Prime Minister, is a tale of class milieu and family set in the context of Herefordshire propertied provincial life, while the second, Fontane’sFrau Jenny Treibelof 1892, is placed within the context of social mobility and volatility of 1890s imperial Berlin.¹ Trollope’s novel, like almost everything he wrote, is a psychological portrait of money, property, and alliance.
