- The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for preventing work-related injury and illness (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2013a). NIOSH is part of the CDC within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The main legislative underpinnings of NIOSH are the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1969 (or MSH Act; Pub. L. 91-173, amended by Pub.
