- If one teaches a year-long course in Shakespeare, the chances are good that the study will be divided chronologically between early and late—the middle sometimes has to fend for itself—or apportioned according to genres, with the histories and comedies often grouped together. In any event, for the purpose of this paper my concern is with the early comedies. Unless one teaches play by play with no reference to issues of artistic development or links between plays, one may seek some dramatic problem or theme as a point of reference in order to provide coherence to the course. I
