Jean-Paul Sartre describes the first critical moment in the life of a Jew growing up in a gentile society as the discovery of his own uniqueness, of his specialness in the eyes of others. “Sometimes,” he says, “the discovery is made through the smiles of the people among whom one lives; sometimes it is brought about by gossip or insults. The later the discovery is made, the more violent is its impact. Suddenly each one perceives that everybody else knows something about him of which he himself was ignorant.”¹ We have no way of determining when and how Rojas discovered
