• IT IS OUR contention that the traditional approaches to personality which either assume, or seek to find and measure, “general characteristics,” “source traits,” “genotypes,” “life styles,” “basic factors,” and the rest have taken the wrong road to understanding the person, and are in error in their fundamental premise that there are such general styles, characteristics, or traits. In contrast to this is a general theory of personality development, presented here in outline, which draws heavily on sociological concepts.
