- The neural basis of our ability to perceive a rich palette of smells can be compared with the neural basis of our ability to perceive a rich palette of colors. The best way to illustrate this is by comparison with pointillist art. There are two ways to put colored paint on a canvas to elicit the perception of color in the mind of the observer.
