National development banks (DBs) are often considered “exotic” institutions, typical of developing countries and of incomplete financial markets. Even though their contribution to economic development worldwide has been relevant, especially after World War II, two recent economic phenomena are helping to undermine usually ideologically biased evaluations and to illuminate their strategic role in different economies.
