• When one thinks of polity—and by that I mean political/communal organization—and the Hebrew Bible, the book of Genesis does not normally come immediately to mind. All the other pentateuchal books offer very overt prescriptions about what it meant for the people of Yahweh to function in a corporate manner. The books of Exodus through Deuteronomy seem to reflect a view of the people as being grounded in covenant and founded with a constitution, which is preeminently present in the book of Deuteronomy.¹ Genesis is bereft of such language.
