• Among the many outstanding contributions of S. Dean McBride Jr. to biblical studies has been his attention to the way that various communities within ancient Israel defined themselves and especially the way such group-defining “constitutions” appear in legal texts. The book that has most often been the subject of McBride’s study, Deuteronomy, is an ideal subject for the topic, for it explicitly envisions the corporate life of a people.
