• At the beginning of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986), after successfully faking illness to stay home from school, young Ferris (Matthew Broderick) sits up, turns directly to the camera, and announces triumphantly: “They bought it.” More than a fly in the face of the conventional closed diegesis of classical Hollywood narrative, Ferris’s rupture of the fourth wall offers the film’s first significant instance of camera movement.
