• On 1 October 1946 Ontario premier George Drew announced that Abitibi would “rehabilitate” the Sturgeon Falls mill, converting it from newsprint production to corrugated medium. “This is the happiest day of my life,” exclaimed Mayor Ray Cockburn: “This is a godsend for the people of Sturgeon Falls, scores of whom were on relief after the tragic shut-down of the mill.”² In the years that followed the plant continued to expand, with the addition of a hardboard mill in 1951, a platewood mill in 1957, and a second hardboard mill in 1962.
