• In his interesting essay on the relationship between scientific interna tionalism, human rights and the Cold War, historian Paul Rubinson seems to agree with historian Joseph Manzione’s assertion that ‘bipolar scientific internationalism’ existed that would unite the scientific com munity with an anti-communist and pro-Western ideology.¹ Scientific internationalism, therefore, although it engaged with human rights in many different ways, would be driven mainly by the strength of sci entific values, preferring not to be overly involved in the dynamics of international politics.
