• Modern African humanism emerged in response to the comprehensive dehumanization of black (i. e., sub-Saharan) Africans by Europeans who, since at least the fifteenth century, would fatefully bind the lives and experiences of Africans—including here the African diaspora—to the impact of that unholy trinity of racism, slavery, and colonialism. At the height of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Europeans considered Africans devoid of reason, living solely in accordance with their bodily appetites and lacking moral sense. However, by the nineteenth century another perception of Africans gained prominence: benighted, heathen souls to be saved by the light of Christ. The
