  • An 1833 British act of Parliament abolishing slavery came into effect on 1 August 1834. Enslaved people did not immediately become free. Instead, slavery was replaced by a system known as apprenticeship, in which those who had been enslaved were required to work for their former owners for 40.5 hours a week without pay. The most significant change was that estate managers were not allowed to use physical violence against apprentices, but had to call on a newly created set of officials known as stipendiary magistrates to determine punishments.
