• ANDREW LYNCH’S WORK has been at the centre of medieval literary studies for the last quarter-century. His scholarship has embraced gender studies, medievalism, children’s literature, post-colonialism, and war and peace studies. In Malory’s Book of Arms (1997), Lynch brilliantly argues that the thematics of combat, which scholars had ignored, were in fact central to understanding Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte Darthur. More recently, he has taken up the history of emotions in Arthurian texts. In attempting to honour a remarkable scholar and friend, I locate this chapter at the juncture of two areas of Andrew’s expertise, linking Malory’s “combat theme”
