• Jean-Marie Carré long held the chair of “Littératures modernes comparées” at the Sorbonne. A specialist in literary relations among France, Germany, and England, Carré was known for studies of travel writing and accounts of writers’ influence abroad, such as Goethe en Angleterre (1920). Carré gave a pointed expression of his perspective in his preface to a 1951 survey of comparative literature by his former student Marius-François Guyard. Here Carré strongly—even sternly—emphasizes that comparatists should focus on “rapports de fait” or concrete literary relations between writers and cultures, rather than on more general patterns or parallels.
