• SOMEWHAT REMARKABLY, there are two French-speaking Swiss-born philosophers, of different generations, but each living in one of Canada’s two biggest cities, both of whom work on the philosophy of emotion. Almost none of those things is true of me, although once upon a time I spoke French well and at different times I have lived in each of their cities. Still, I open with this observation because my account of the relation between emotion and virtue was originally inspired by the work of the elder member of this pair. Specifically, a central thread of my account was inspired by the
