  • As old aesthetic debates grow moldy, it has become increasingly apparent that polemics both promoting and devaluing the spectral category of “realism” are largely unilluminating. To a certain extent, the polarization between advocates of “critical” and “socialist” realism such as Georg Lukács and champions of modernism, most notably Roland Barthes, was engendered by nowoutmoded cold war tensions.
