• The first recorded ancient pirates were the mysterious Sea Peoples, who menaced the Mediterranean during the Bronze Age, hastening the demise of three great civilizations: the Hittites, the Minoans, and the Mycenaeans. They also sorely tested the Egyptians, until the Egyptians managed to repulse the marauders from the Nile River delta. But the Minoans on the island of Crete, the proto-Greek Mycenaeans, and the Hittites of the Anatolian Peninsula of present-day Turkey all were vulnerable to the Sea Peoples’ raids.
