• Okinoerabu Island is one of the Japanese Southwest Islands located in the subtropics. Intensive flowerculture is uptiding drastically in recent years on this island. In this report the nitrate concentrations of groundwa ters in Wadomari-town of Okinoerabu Island were determined. The relation between the concentration and the agricultural activity on land was discussed. 1. The groundwaters in the northeastern part of the town showed clearly higher nitrate concentrations than those in the western part. 2. The proportion of cultivated land is higher in the northeastern part of the town than in the southwestern part. Larger part of the northeastern farms are used for intensive flowerculture than the southwestern farms. Thus more nitrogen is supposed to be loaded as fertilizer on the northeastern land. 3. Land uses and agricultural system can have significant influences on the groundwater environments in the Southwest Islands around the subtropics of Japan.
