  • As reported before, there appears to be a relation between socio-economic conditions and methods or techniques of agricultural technology transfer. However few studies have been carried out in this field. This paper attempts to analyse the relation between the socio-economic conditions and methods of extension of agricultural technology and to examine its characteristics by surveying the process of economic development and the changes in the agricultural extension systems in the period from Meiji Restoration to World War II in Japan. The period observed is divided into three sub-periods as follows: 1. The first part of the Meiji Era (1868-1885) . 2. The period from the second part of the Meiji Era to the first part of the Taisho Era (1885-1919) . 3. The period from the Second part of the Taisho Era to World War II (1919-1941) . By examining the relation between the socio-economic conditions and methods of agricultural extension, three periods can be identified with the following trend of technology transfer. 1. The method of transfer shifts from “individual method” to “organized method”, “direct-leading method” to “indirect-leading method”, “man-to-man method” to “group-leading method”, etc. 2. The contents of the techniques to be transferred shift from “original technique” to “appropriate technique”, “simple/easy technique” to “complex/difficult technique in use”, “cheap technique in unit price” to “expensive technique”, “technique of staple food production” to “technique of production of other crops such as industrial crops”, “technique for increasing the quantity of the products” to “technique for improving the quality of the products” etc. It is considered that this sequence of technology transfer may contribute to the improvement of the methods of technology transfer in developing countries.
